Jamie Kah and The Tycoon

       The midweek meetings came from Sandown Warwick Farm and Balaclava yesterday. One of the highlights was the win by the Snitzel filly, Sure Knee in the opener in Sydney. While I reckon the performance of the Written Tycoon first starter, Alexandra Dreaming featured highly at Sandown. Jamie Lee Kah in South Australia is absolutely on fire with another treble at the Balaclava meeting.

  • Shoko and Sandown --  Sandown started off with a strong win to Condover Hall in the maiden, over 1600m, for the Weir/Rawiller combination.The Mastercraftsman 4yo is in his second preparation and could well win again over a touch further. The Written Tycoon first starter from the Henry Dwyer stable called Alexandra Dreaming won at a good price in the second maiden of the day with Ben Allen riding. She could be a star on the rise. In the BM 64 over 2100m saw the High Chaparral gelding Truly High storm down the outside for the Weir camp to win easily. This time it was the Irishman Johnny Allen riding. The win of the Sebring five year old mare, Shoko puts her record at two from two starts over 1400m. She was ridden by Linda Meech and never looked like getting run down. 
  • All Too Hard and Exceed and Excel -- Sure Knee put up a super performance to win the opener at Warwick Farm for trainer Chris Waller. It was the fillies second start and James Mcdonald had to work hard to keep her going to the line after using plenty of petrol early. The Snitzel filly looks the goods. They say Warwick Farm is a track specialist course and it might be worth noting the second win in a row here for the All Too Hard colt, Tarka over the 1600m trip. It was a good ride by James Mcdonald and he had a good day with a treble. While Cormac in the 2200m made it a double for the breed and both were out of Galileo mares. In the BM75 over the 1000m saw the daughter of Divine Madonna,Deity score for the Godolphin stable. She was ridden by Tommy Berry and it was the fillies second win over the trip. She is by Exceed and Excel who got a double for the day when Coruscate for the Cummings/Mcdonald combination recorded a victory in the last over 1200m, in the BM70.  I just wanted to touch on the win of  the 7 year old gelding Conarchie over 1400m. He is by the Redoutes Choice stallion Time Thief and I have noticed when they get out in front on their own and dictate, tends to lead to success for the breed. It was his eight win today and fourth at Warwick Farm. They are having alot of success in South Australia and always win at big odds. They have my attention!
  • Jamie Kah -- Her first winner for the day was the Ryan Balfour trained, Bris Vegas in the Class 2 over the 1000m but I think her ride of the day was on the Bianconi gelding, Playfellow in the BM 60. She timed her run to perfection over the 1600m which is a pet distance for the breed. She also ran second on another three well backed runners and then finished the day on a high for the Tony Mckevoy camp. When the four year old mare Fleeting Feeling by I Am Invincible bolted in with a four and half length margin.

Miss Fabulass and Nuke

       Racing came from Canterbury and Sandown midweek with a Murray Bridge meeting in South Australia. The opener at Canterbury saw the blueblood, Miss Fabulass come out on top. The Frankel filly controlled the three horse race, to win easily. She is out of the excellent Redoutes Choice mare, Samantha Miss who ran third in the 2008 Cox Plate and is a triple group one winner. There was a double to the Smart Missiles. While the Chris Waller trained four year old Ocean Park gelding, Star of the Seas made it two wins in a row this preparation. 
  • Smart Missile -- There was a double for the Fastnet Rock stallion on Wednesday with wins to Nuke at Canterbury and the 3 year old filly Chevalier Deon which recorded an easy win over the 1300m BM 64 at Sandown. The John Mcardle trained galloper was well ridden by Jamie Mott sitting behind the leaders until the turn where she got a split and burst through for the win. James Innes jnr rode his first city winner as a senior jockey, after two months without his claim, on the Smart Missile three year old gelding,Nuke. He drove up along the inside rail to beat the favorite Bubbbles‘n’Troubles, by a head.
  •  Sandown and Declaration of Heart --Declaration of Heart who is by the War Front stallion, Declaration of War out of the Encosta De Lago mare, Cardiac. The colt won with a lot of authority over the 1300m distance. Trained by Anthony Freedman and ridden by Mark Zahra he is now unbeaten in his only two starts.

  • Ocean Park -- Star of the Seas was yet another winner for the five time group one winning stallion Ocean Park who stands at Waikato Stud in New Zealand. He is really starting to produce the winners and they are especially good fresh over the 1200 to 1400m trips. The Waller trained galloper was ridden by Jay Ford and had been freshened since his last win on 18th July at Warwick Farm for the 1250m event. At Murray Bridge we saw a win to Celtic Blast over the 900m he has now won twice over the short trip and three wins from five starts. He is by the Commands stallion, Atomic who stands at for a service fee of just $1,650 at Daffey’s Claremont Thoroughbreds at Gatum in Victoria.

Catchy's Sister Symi


      Well with the Bendigo meeting off because of heavy rain on Wednesday it left us with just Canterbury and Gawler meetings. The Sydney meeting had some interesting winners with Catchy's full sister recording her maiden win in the benchmark 69. Symi held off some late challenges to record victory and the first leg of a race to race double for Fastnet Rock as the five year old gelding Metamorphic won the next for the Waller/ James Mcdonald combo.

  • Symi and Fastnet Rock --  Fastnet Rock filly Symi was the centre of attention at Canterbury on Wednesday and after leading all the way she showed plenty of fight to get a win in the Benchmark 69 over 1250 metres. "She jumped well, travelled beautifully in the run and dug deep when it mattered, and she'll improve a lot off that too."said trainer, Michael Hawkes. She is out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Cats Whiskers making her a full sister to Catchy. Her win was followed in the next race by the lightly raced Fastnet Rock gelding Metamorphic winning the BM74 over 1250m for Chris Waller. Its also worth noting the win of Its Fait Accompli in the last here who is also out of a Fusaichi Pegasus mare in Rhema. The five year old Stratum gelding has now won 172,000 dollars in prizemoney after winning the Narrandera Cup 1600m last start.  
  • Smart Missile --The 3yo filly Maid of Heaven secured her maiden victory for trainer Mark Newnham with Tim Clarke in the saddle over the 1250m trip.Gary Portelli four year old Foxwedge, gelding Puppet Master was successful in the BM78 over 1100m. He is out of the Encosta De Lago mare, Pinnochio. The Fastnet Rock stallion is champion second season sire and stands for 22,000 dollars at Newgate Farm
Checkout the Foxwedge filly Urban Fox winning the Group one Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh early last month.
  •      Jamie Kah and Hikaya -- Jamie Kah continued on with her success at the Gawler meeting having wins on Hikaya a three year old filly by O'reilly out of the Encosta De Lago mare,Bint Piavonic for Tony Mcevoy. She was first up today over the 1200m trip and did it on her own speed never really pushed out by Jamie to break her maiden status. The O'reilly's when fresh are definately a betting proposition.  While the Ryan Balfour trained Masipeg got home in the BM 64 for mares over 1200m. She is also out of an Encosta De Lago mare, Essence of Success.

Sepoy and Chris Waller


     The start of a new racing season today as we wonder what lays ahead this year with the crop of thoroughbreds we have seen and ones that are still to appear. One thing for sure Chris Waller will be in the winners circle plenty of times if the Warwick Farm meeting is any guide.  Chris and Zoustar were to the fore in the opener with Charge coming out victorious. This was followed by a race to race double to the Darley stallion Sepoy with both Sweet Scandal and Impasse winning for Chris.
  • Sepoy and Warwick Farm -- The Zoustar colt, Charge opened the day by breaking his maiden in strong fashion under the riding of James Mcdonald over the 1100m.Interesting to note the runner up was another Zoustar galloper, in Altair. I think the highlight of the meeting came with a race to race double for two Chris Waller trained, Sepoy gallopers . The first  Sweet Scandal who is a very promising mare and now has three wins from her four starts. She was ridden beautifully by young Sam Weatherly carrying nearly 60kgs to victory in the benchmark 70. She is out of Encosta mare, Bachanal Woman making her a full sister to Bayou, in Adelaide.  While Impasse in the 1400 BM 72 made it two wins in a row and a total of three victories from eight starts with an impressive win under the riding of Hugh Bowman. The four year old gelding is Ex Redoutes Choice mare, Amelias Dream who certainly can produce quality. 
  • Check out the progress on another promising three year old filly by Sepoy the Darren Weir trained, Anjana.

  • Sale -- In the opening maiden at Sale we saw the Foxwedge 3yo gelding Another Bit win his maiden over 1200m. He was ridden by Noel Callow for John Mcardle, who has been having a great run of late. While Little Bita Spunk battled strongly to finally secure another win in a BM64. The six year old Magnus gelding is out of the Fastnet Rock mare, Rock Me Sweet. While in the last race the class one, over 1200m saw victory go to the Star Witness four year old gelding, Star Silk who also comes from a Fastnet mare in Majeed.
  • Stryker and Magnus -- Today saw a double to stallions who's winners tend to like the give in the ground that is Magnus and Stryker. A good ride by Dom Tourneur saw the Magnus 3yo gelding Binding Force get up in the 1200m maiden at Morphetville adding to the success of  Little Bita Spunk. He is out of the Redoutes Choice mare, Obbligato and trained by Phil Stokes. While in the 1200m maiden saw the costly proposition, Flop by Stryker nail the Sepoy filly, Bayou right on the line to prevent a full sister double on the day as Sweet Scandal scored at Warwick Farm. If we shift to Sale we find in the 1400m maiden a win by the Matt Laurie trained, Stryker Queen both venues were run on soft tracks.
          Performances of other runners worth a mention today were Resurge by So You Think who is entered in the Golden Rose in September for Tony Mcevoy . The colt was an easy winner first up today over 1400m at Sale for jockey Luke Currie. In Sydney there was another promising Smart Missile filly in Ready to Prophet that won easily after being a little difficult to ride on entering the straight for Tim Clarke but boy oh boy didnt she pull clear when finding her feet. I think the Waterhouse/Bott stable may have a good one here.

The Smart Edge


        The midweek racing saw the Smart Missile's continue their super run with a treble which included Smart Aint He who was successful after almost falling in the Canterbury maiden. It was a great piece of riding by Blake Shinn who was also on the winner in the final race of the day. The talented Smart Edge . While the double for the stallion, Hussonet is something worth touching on. First it was Pretty Glass at Murray Bridge then Golden Tycoon  at Canterbury. He continues to produce winners of quality over the shorter trips. The recently departed Hinchinbrook also got a double with wins from the 2yo colt Leanardo Da Hinchi at Sandown and five year old gelding Trafalgar for trainer Chris Waller. 
  Checkout Smart Missile now 15th on the Australian stallion list for this season with only three crops racing.
  • Holy Command -- The Zac Spain and Mick Price combination struck again at Sandown with the good win of the Smart Missile gelding, Holy Command. After a nine week break, Zac sent him down the centre of the track to record an easy victory. He is out of the Flying Spur mare, Matinee and is one to watch for sure.
  • Sandown and Illumicon -- Another runner appearing fresh yesterday and recording a strong win was the Tony Mcevoy trained gelding, Illumicon. This Nicconi galloper is out of the Encosta mare, Elucidate and made his run down the centre of the track as well, to record a victory over the 1000m trip.  
  • In the opening event on the Sandown card we saw the win of the unbeaten Hinchinbrook colt, Leonardo Da Hinchi. He was ridden by Ben Allen for Darren Weir and is out of the Octagonal mare, Portrait. We lost the promising stallion last week to a paddock accident and this win and the one of the Waller trained, Trafalgar at Canterbury are two reminders of his influence. Trafalgar was returning from a long layoff and good ride by young NZ jockey Sam Weatherly who is riding in awesome form at the moment securing a narrow victory over the Canterbury 1900m. 
  • Smart Aint He and Smart Edge -- The talented but erratic Smart Missile gelding give Blake Shinn one torrid ride before breaking his maiden for the Cummings stable at Canterbury. He almost fell around the back of the track with Blake losing his irons but somehow managed to recover and secure the win. The Snowden trained Smart Edge scored a good win in the last to secure a double for the breed and a double for jockey Blake Shinn. 
  • Canterbury and Gwenneth -- I wanted to mention this four year old mare Gwenneth, in my summary because i can see a huge improvement in her recently while putting two successive wins on the board. Today, she was ridden by Kayla Nisbett in the benchmark 75 over 1100m for Mitch Beer. She is out of the Reset mare, Moorunda Miss. The Reward For Efforts never really mature i dont think until they turn three. She maybe one to follow over the next twelve months.
  • Murray Bridge -- It was ladies day with Raquel Clarke getting a treble and Jamie kah continuing her winning way and tallying 150 wins for the season. One of Raquel"s rides was the lightly raced Pretty Glass for Sue Jaensch who came home strong to beat the wayward Manhattan Melody to make it two wins from three starts. The four year old mare is by Hussonet who have alot of success in South Australia and today we even saw the breed have success at Canterbury with the two year old Golden Tycoon adding to the breeds win tally. Both races were over the 1200m trips.

The Smart Smart Missiles's

Wednesday July 18th meetings were at Sandown, Warwick Farm and Balaclava. It was fine and good at all tracks with not much rain anywhere. The announcement yesterday from NSW racing lifting their prizemoney by 24 million dollars would have had many participants in that state rubbing their hands with glee. The Snowden and Waller camps would of for sure with Island Missile scoring impressively and Star of the Seas for the later just as impressive .
  •  Ocean Park and O'reily -- I thought i would commence with these two stallions because both get winners when fresh on a regular basis and today was no different. When three year old gelding Star of the Seas was a convincing winner at Warwick Farm in the opening event over 1200m for Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman. Our Libretto by O'reilly was a good winner at Sandown storming home from the rear of the field to win the maiden over 1400m.  Although the later will be six in a couple of weeks so time running out for her but over the past few weeks the breed have regularly scored first up. 
  • Palmateer -- It was a solid win by the three year old daughter of Fastnet Rock for Chris Waller and jockey, Michael Walker who had a little fight with her through the middle stages but once she settled she was far too good.  She is out of the Encosta De Lago mare, Little Surfer Girl.
  • Snitzel -- It was a state double for Snitzel as we head towards spring where they will have strong representation no doubt. Special Diva at Sandown led them up in the BM 78 for fillies and mares . It was a good ride by Zac Spain for the Mick Price stable as the four year old mare just had enough in the tank to last the 1400m trip. I have notice it takes her around the third start of a prep before she hits her mark. Another win could be beckoning. While in Sydney the in form Brad Widdup stable scored with 4yo Snitzel mare, Live to Dream in BM75 for FandM. It was her fifth win from 14 starts and third start this preparation very similar formlines to Special Diva.

  • Smart Missile -- The Smart Missile's started the day firing with a quinella in the opener at Sandown. It was a neck and neck struggle over the 1200m for two year old fillies between Grand Wish who got up along the inside and the well backed Chevalier Déon who had a slightly tougher run than the winner. Interesting to note is they are both out of Strategic mares. The successful Woodlands stallion who passed away earlier in the week.  While we saw a promising debut at Balaclava by Isca Augusta who gave the Mcevoy/Kah short priced 2yo galloper by Bel Esprit, Belzella a run for its money in the 1050m race. The Bel Esprit's are so hot at the moment in these shorter events. There is not a day goes by without the progeny winning.  These four are all worth following. In the benchmark 71 for three year olds at Warwick Farm we possibly saw the most impressive win of the day go to the Snowden trained Island Missile who under 60kg with jockey, Blake Shinn bringing the gelding to the outside and storming home to victory. 

  • Tony Mcevoy and Jamie Kah -- The ultimate combination were racking up some sort of epic tally at Balaclava today as their incredible run come to an end but not the winners. The opening maiden belonged to Belzella then followed the All Too Hard gelding, Demolition in the second and finally the fifth event the Hinchinbrook two year old colt East Indiaman who cruized home in the 1400m maiden. He is definately one to follow.

Sweet Scandal and Thunder Cloud

        Midweek racing this week saw the Hayes/Dabernig trained Gold Mag put his name to the list of spring contenders at the Sandown track. While at Warwick Farm the Waller trained Sweet Scandal impressed again. The country racing was at Grafton for the Ramornie Handicap meeting where the Toby Edmonds trained, Havasay was given a gem of a ride by Matt Mcgillivray bursting through late, to gain victory.
  • Sweet Scandal -- A confident ride by Blake Shinn on Sweet Scandal saw the Sepoy filly make it two wins in a row. She is out of Encosta De Lago mare, Bachannal Woman who is producing some promising gallopers. While in the benchmark 74 over 1100m, the Joseph Pride trained four year old gelding Argent Dór recorded a good win in the final race of  the day. The Sebring geldings last win was this time last year and was ridden by young Andrew Adkins.
  • Sandown and Gold Mag -- Craig Williams continued on his winning way at Sandown with a treble. His first winner came from a great ride on the New Zealand import Cataracta. Then in the second he followed with another NZer called Gold Mag . The Hayes/Dabernig gelding who stays unbeaten,  left his opposition in his dust with a brilliant turn of foot. The three year old Savabeel gelding is out of the High Chaparral mare, Chapinta so will definately appreciate more ground than todays 1200m race.

  • Thunder Cloud scored his fourth win this preparation for Darren Weir in convincing style with Damian Lane riding strongly at the end of the 2100m BM 78. The Manhattan Rain gelding is building a good record for his connections. In the last race, Queen Annabel gave C.Williams his third win for the day as she strode clear of her opposition. The mare is by the Sun Stud prolific producer of winners in Bel Esprit and the 1200m suited perfectly. Bel Esprit stands back in Victoria this year after spending a few years in Queensland.
  • Morphetville -- Jockey, Jason Holder rode four winners at the Morphetville meeting commencing with the Tony Mcevoy trained, Startum gelding, Volum who broke his maiden status, in the opening race over 1250m.  The other galloper worth mentioning is the Ambidexter gelding, Dexelation who made it a hat trick of wins. The Mick O'shea trained, Alfie Chann ridden galloper just lasted over the 1250m in the BM60. 
  • Grafton Carnival -- In the listed Ramornie Hcp, Havasay lifted his earnings to nearly 500,000 dollars with a strong win in the 1200m event. The Rothesay five year old gelding was ridden beautifully by Matt Mcgillivray bursting through an opening halfway up the straight. He is out of the Show A Heart mare, Showhama.  In the Grafton Guineas the Snitzel 3yo gelding Turnberry fought on strongly for Kris Lees and Corey Brown combination to record another victory. 
The Fastnet Rock stallion Rothesay stands at Lyndhurst Stud on the Darling Downs. He is out of  Schiaparelli who is a daughter of Canny Lad's full sister Canny Lass. Represents great value check him out here.
