Scandal and Melody

Midweek racing this week were at the tight circuits of Canterbury and Moonee Valley. While in Queensland we saw another possible two year old star by Zoustar, in Zoustyle, trounce his rivals at Doomben by five lengths.
Smart Melody -- The Smart Missile filly exploded away from her opposition on straightening which surprised jockey Brenton Avdulla and after the race said "he had'nt seen one show that much turn of foot in awhile."Kris Lees could have a contender for some spring prizes here.
Sepoy and I Am Invincible --In an earlier race we saw Yarraman Park Stallion, I Am Invincible record his 19th two year old winner for the season with Ducale scoring. This puts the stallion clear for the most two year old winners this season . Following yesterdays win at Wyong by 2yo colt, Salsa Man. Ducale is out of the group three winning daughter of Galileo, Saint Minerva. Jockey Jay Ford was impressed by her improvement from last start. The first on the card saw the Sepoy filly, Sweet Scandal ridden by Blake Shinn victorious even though she didnt appear to handle the wet conditions. She is out of that good producing Encosta De Lago mare, Bachanal Woman. Which makes her a half to Chris Waller's other good galloper, Sir Bachus.
Bel Esprit --At the Valley saw the sprinting prowess of the Bel Esprit's come to the fore. Jockey Craig Williams in the first over 1200m got the Shea Eden, Bright Eyes home. After not handling the real heavy track at Swan Hill last start. The breed do go well at the Valley and it wasnt long in the day before they had another winner when Belwazi continued on her winning way with young Stephanie Thornton in the saddle. Todays 1000m dash gives the four year old mare, six wins from twelve starts.

Jen Rules the Seasons

The main meeting this Wednesday was at Canterbury with a heavy track so was'nt expecting much but there were a few, worth the mention. The first one was the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Jen Rules. Then the following two races produced some quality as well, with the last of the High Chaparral's in Thinkin Big successful and the Sebring's continued their stellar run with the filly Seasons, blowing them away.

Jen Rules -- This Redoutes Choice filly, looked strong with a last ditch lunge which gained her the verdict, over the Zoustar filly, Mizzy. I can see her improving in dryer conditions and maybe a bigger track. She is out of the Encosta De Lago mare, Fate Rules. She was sold at the 2017 Inglis Easter yearling sales for $500,000. Runner up worth keeping an eye on as well.
Thinkin Big -- The Waterhouse /Bott trained colt, scored over 1100m pointing to a positive future for the last of the High Chaparral's. The short trip and tight track would not have been to his liking so to come up with a victory was a noteworthy effort. Jockey Blake Shinn was also very impressed by the colt and Adrian Bott said an ATC Derby was definately on their radar next Autumn.  While Blake scored again, in the following race, with the Sebring filly, Seasons, trained by Les Bridge. He controlled the race from the front on her and kicked clear on straightening for an easy win. She is out of the Al Maher mare, Acoumplamas which makes her a half sister to the promising I Am Invincible colt, The August.

Run Gypsy Run -- In the benchmark 78 for fillies and mares at Echuca saw this Fastnet Rock mare, get home by a breath, she loves it when she can control from the front and a great ride by Michael Walker saw her prevail . She may not be a real consistent proposition but on her day has some ability.
Okay Boss -- In the Super Vobis two year old event over 1200m at Echuca we saw the Street Boss gelding, Okay Boss get home. This made it his second win at the 1200m. The breed really do excel over it. He was ridden by Chris Parnham and is out of the Bel Esprit mare, Belaura. Chris also scored with the 4yo mare, Miss Siska, for Tony Mcevoy in race 6, under 61kg. The So You Think mare is in excellent form this prep. Later in the day the win of Liberty Song over the 1200 was worth a mention as the 4yo gelding is out of the Bel Esprit mare, Music in the Park.

Sebring - Widden Stud

"A Champion Two-Year-Old and Golden Slipper heros by two-time Champion Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds More Than Ready, Sebring is one of Australia's most exciting young sires." Sebring is out of a mare by Flying Spur, a son of Danehill, but has done well when crossed over mares from other branches of Danzig.

King of the Sprinters Bel Esprit

Just a brief review of the midweek racing for this week. Where wet tracks were in play for Sydney and at Sandown we saw some imports successful on Australian soil. First it was the Mike Moroney trained Hang Man and then Al Galayel, the Zoffany gelding who won the BM70 over 1600m. It was his third win from three starts and a great debut in Australia.  In the sprint events the Bel Espit breed were to the fore.

In the BM70 1600m event at Sandown the filly, Ice Girl ,caused a boilover and gave Jason Baldcock his first city winner, for many years. He returned to race riding in March and the Bel Esprit filly gave him a good ride today, storming home for victory and making trainer, Tommy Hughes, one happy man. She is out of the Flying Spur mare, Titanic Jill. Then in the 1000m BM70 the Bel Esprit mare, Queen Annabel was a good winner for jockey Damian Oliver and trainer Rebecca Kelly.

Blue Diamond Stakes winners ! Redoutes Choice 1999 and Bel Esprit 2002

In Warwick Farm we saw heavy conditions and the Hinchinbrook two year old filly Bubble'n'Troubles break clear of the pack for victory over 1200m. She was ridden by Corey Brown for Chris Waller. The breed love the wet tracks and the off season class drop is perfect for them. Chalmers kept his consistent record going by winning the BM73 over 1600m. The Mossman gelding is out of the Redoutes Choice mare, Nephtys and was ridden by James Mcdonald for Kris Lees could easily win again although I notice a win loss win pattern emerging with him. While in the last race the Commands mare, Popular secured another victory for James Cummings with Tye Angland in the saddle. It is the fillies second win at the track.

Fighting Sun and Barbados

Our Wednesday summary for Gawler, Canterbury and Sandown races is a short one, this week. Limited talent going around but felt i had to mention the continued success of the Sebring clan. A treble by the Redoute's Choice stallion, Barbados also caught my eye and when I checked the dams of the winners. The name Hussonet came to my attention.
  • Barbados -- A winner at Canterbury in the maiden over 1250m for the 3yo gelding, My Blue Jeans, started the day off well, for jockey James Mcdonald and the Barbados breed . Then at Gawler there were two of them successful with Galcrum in the 1150 maiden, for fillies and mares. The filly sat deep, most of the trip and still forged clear down the straight under hard riding by Jeff Maund. She is out of the Hussonet mare, Hushabye. While in the last over the 1100m with Jamie Kah in the saddle, Atlantica, another filly, scored in the BM60. She was heavily backed and won easily. Its interesting to note she is out of the Host mare, Hot Senora. Host is by Hussonet who is a Mr Prospector stallion. Barbados has a connection to the great grey's Emancipation and Gunsynd through his dam Virage De Fortune and Stands at Ducatoon Park in South Australia.

  • Sandown -- Fighting Harada won the 2yo event in great style and could be worth following. The first season stallions to racing progeny go, the Fighting Sun's, do show potential and I would rate them second behind the flying, Zoustars. He won with plenty in hand and is still learning. Layel the winner of the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap is worth a mention being by Reward For Effort out of the Stravinky mare, Dalayel. He was ridden well by Michael Walker for Mick Price to just hold on and win from a desperately unlucky, Grey Shadow.
  • Sebring -- Once the carnivals over the Sebring's come out to play and over the last few weeks they have been cleaning up, all over the shop. Yesterday was no different with a good win by Florida Keys on the Sandown track. He sat wide and finish well to score under strong riding from Rhys Mcleod. At Canterbury it was another James Mcdonald ride that saw the Sebring gelding, Bringagem win the last, BM70 over 1900m.
